2010 will see the 25th anniversary of the death of the poet Philip Larkin.

The city of Hull is marking this through an extensive programme of events which will commemorate Larkin's life and work under the banner Larkin 25: Another Look at Larkin.

As a lasting legacy of the Larkin25 and of Larkin's connections with the city, the Philip Larkin Society proposes to erect a statue of Larkin at Hull Paragon Interchange. Permission in principle has been kindly granted by Network Rail and First Transpennine.

Following a competitive commissioning process to select a sculptor to create a lasting memorial to Larkin, internationally renowned sculptor Martin Jennings has been selected to create a statue of Larkin at Hull Paragon Interchange.

The target date for the unveiling is 2 December 2010, the exact anniversary of Larkin’s death and the closing date of the commemorations. It will be preceded the evening before with a public lecture at the University of Hull (see below).

The Philip Larkin Society has contributed £10,000 to the funding of the statue. We are also grateful for support from Hull City Council, as part of their contribution to the Larkin25 programme. The Society is seeking to raise the remaining funds through donations from individuals and businesses, through grant funding from organisations and trusts, and has already raised funds through 'An Evening with Maureen Lipman CBE' in September.

In making a donation to the statue appeal fund you are playing your part in the creation of a lasting memorial to Philip Larkin. Donors contributing more than £50 will be listed in a commemorative book documenting the project, to be published in 2011.

Martin Jennings is a distinguished sculptor, perhaps best known for his acclaimed statue of Sir John Betjeman at St Pancras Station. He speaks on the eve of the unveiling of his related bronze statue of Philip Larkin at Hull Paragon Station as the culmination of the Larkin2 season on the exact 25th anniversary of Larkin's death.
