Larkin25 - Larkin with Toads
This year Hull is celebrating the work of Philip Larkin - regarded as Britain’s favourite post-war poet! The Larkin25 season comprises a wide range of high profile events to honour the former University of Hull Librarian and enhance the city’s cultural reputation.
Local businesses have supported this exciting programme through its landmark project - Larkin with Toads - the biggest mass participation public art event the city has ever seen. Inspired by Larkin’s poems, Toads and Toads Revisited, a myriad of metre high brightly coloured Toad sculptures are populating our city for ten weeks across the summer when all eyes are on Hull. Companies selected designs from this gallery to sponsor. By sponsoring a Toad they have helped to: • Promote Larkin25 • Support a high quality unique creative
programme • Support the city and local communities
• Attract visitors from home and abroad
• Raise Hull’s cultural profile
Decorative designs were submitted by professional artists from across the country and beyond. Sponsors were able to select the design they preferred or have the option to work with local community groups on different aspects of the project. The Toads were unveiled on 17 July 2010, linking with the events surrounding the return of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race to Hull on that day. The programme reflects the uniqueness and specialness of Hull and its people and has made a major cultural splash, provoking local, national and international interest. The Toads are 'inhabiting' the area for 10 weeks; a map has been created to encourage visitors and residents alike to discover these unique sculptures and what is so special about the City of Hull. The event will conclude with a grand auction, the proceeds of which will be shared amongst charitable funds that support causes close to the heart of Larkin and this project - supporting environmental, animal welfare and artistic projects, as well as a contribution to the Lord Mayor's Charity. If you have fallen in love with your sponsored Toad, this could be your opportunity to take it home. |
